This is a bit of a different post than what I usually put up, aka talking about writing and books…BUT I wanted to include different topics in my blog including a health section..soo lately I’ve been watching a lot of videos by Essena ONeill, and feeling very inspired to get more fit and healthy ( for those of you who don’t know of her, she is basically this amazing Australian 18 year old teenage girl who encourages people to start eating clean and going vegan.) Now, I’m not vegan haha. I am very much a meat eater. Although I don’t go overboard with eating meat, and I certainly try to eat healthier smaller portions of meat, and making sure I eat meat that doesn’t have a lot of fat on it. There are probably two reasons I can think of why people go vegan: 1. Animal cruelty. This industry can be very cruel to animals, and very inhumane. I’ve seen a few videos that show how brutal they treat animals and it’s enough to make me cry. Which is why I make sure that I am buying my meat from a place I can trust. I only buy my eggs cage-free, and I’m actually lucky here, because in Australia, a lot of people know how to treat animals, and there is more respect I think than in other countries. It’s also a health issue as well. Many countries, and third-world ones especially don’t properly look after their animals, and this can spread diseases. 2. They like the health benefits of clean eating. Plant-based eating is very good for you, and it also gives you a lot of energy if you can do it properly. Of course, you need a lot of substitutes in your diet though. Instead of drinking full cream cow’s milk, people opt to go for almond milk, or soy. And instead of meat, they will go for lentil patties, as an example. In regards to myself, I try to live a balanced lifestyle and diet. I can’t say I could ever give up meat. I think that my body needs that protein, but I do think I should take it in moderation. If I cut back on eating meat throughout the week, and focus on drinking soups instead, or having vegetable stirfrys, or noodles, then I can have a balance of good fats. I am also cutting back on eating stuff with preservatives in it, and eating too much sugar(Although I never was really a sugar addict) The amount of sugar and nasty stuff found in food these days in supermarkets is appalling! So I encourage people to check the labels of food. I’ve even opted to choose dark chocolate over milk chocolate. Not that it was a hard choice I have always loved dark chocolate more! It makes me feel less guilty eating it 😉 Milk chocolate is worse for you, because of the amount of dairy in it, and sugars, whereas dark chocolate has more cocoa beans in it, which is actually healthy for you if eaten in moderation. Basically: Snacks are healthy if eaten in moderation! Just like the food pyramid they taught you in school. You should always have heaps of bread (preferably wholemeal or grains) and pasta, then fruit and vegetables than, milk and cheese, then it goes meats and fish, and then oils and sweets. I have always remembered this and stuck by it. I am in love with fruit and vegetables anyway so it’s definitely not hard for me! I was even nicknamed a fruit bat as a kid XD Yesterday I went to the health store though to kickstart this new health routine I am trying. The health store is called alnatura, and it’s great because you can buy what you need in bulk, and you can weigh what you want on the scales and only pay for what amount you need. So I grabbed a few wonderful products from their store, and ending up getting this lovely arrangement! (Which I presented quite attractively, as I am trying to do more product photography) It consists of: *shredded coconut *chia seeds *acai berry powder mix *quinoa *dark chocolate covered coffee beans *Tilley charcoal soap (made in Australia) The soap is amazing, you can double it as an all over body soap and face that helps clear up your skin, and as a shampoo + conditioner! It stops that yucky shampoo buildup you get! And with these lovely products I bought, I made my first ever acai berry bowl tonight and this is how it turned out! I basically mixed in frozen banana, frozen berries, the powder, almond milk, chia seeds all in a blender, then topped it with fruit! Verdict: It was delicious, and refreshing, and it was very filling! ( Perfect to eat in Summer too. I made this in Winter, and its probably too cold for this season at the moment, but I am going to make them a lot when it gets warmer.) Some time ago I attended a workshop to cook with superfoods. It was a great experience, and I was totally hooked on the incredible benefits of superfoods. Is this belief justified and are these specialty foods and powders worth the money? What are superfoods? There is no official definition for a superfood. Neither are there standard criteria or certified lists. It is a term that was invented by marketers, not nutritionists or scientists. Usually, a superfood is described as a naturally nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial to your health and well-being. Here is a pretty extensive list of superfoods . Marketing of superfoods It seems that exotic foods attract greater attention (goji berries, acai berries, pomegranate, chia seed, and cocoa) than more accustomed and everyday products (olive oil, fat fish, garlic, homegrown berries, strawberries, and broccoli). The more exotic recommended products are, the greater the miracle effects seem to be attributed to them. They are expensive and exclusive. This marketing position makes people believe that more standard and cheaper products are less healthy in comparison. Scientific research on superfoods Active supporters recommend superfoods as miracle food with various health benefits. Going from “detoxing”, “improving resistance” to “slowing down aging” and “preventing cardiovascular disease”. Most of the time these claims are based on intuition or personal experience. Although there has been some scientific research to prove the benefits of superfoods, the results are still vague and ill-founded. Well then, how should we go about superfoods? First, give your current eating habits some serious thought. Do you eat at least three portions of vegetables per day? Are you on a healthy diet with enough nutrients? If the answer to one of these questions is no, then there is no use to stuff yourself with superfoods. A healthy daily routine is essential before you can benefit from additional nutrient efforts. Let’s say a super diet is more important than super foods. Eating one or two superfoods in addition to an unhealthy diet will only give a false sense of security, nothing more, and nothing less. Also, eating loads of superfoods can do more harm than good. High doses of some nutrients can be a risk to your health or can disrupt absorption of other essential nutrients. My all time favourite breakfast bowl. It’s true love. Unbreakable even. Smoothie bowls are great because you can get as many superfoods into your morning as you fit into a blender, plus you can fill yourself up on delicious fruit fibre and additional delicious toppings! It’s like having granola/muesli, but instead of milk, you have an antioxidant, superfood melody of delicious goodness. What a combo! I am having a total love affair with Acai at the moment and just can’t get enough of it. Acai is a powerful and nutritious super food that is incredibly high in antioxidants, polyphenols, anthocyanins, amino acids, dietary fibre as well as vitamins and minerals; including calcium, phosphorus, beta-carotene and vitamin E. Acai is great for the skin partly due to the fact it is rich in essential fatty acids omega-3,6 and 9 , as well as being incredibly high on the ORAC scale(Oxygen radical absorbance capacity). Originating from Brazil, this berry is well worth adding into your diet, not only for it’s beauty benefits, but also for its health effects and free radical busting capabilities. This one I added homemade Granola with cacao and maca oats – yum! So for one relatively large Acai smoothie bowl you shall need roughly: 1 + 1/2 frozen bananas * 1-4 – 1/2 cup berries – strawberries / raspberries / blueberries or a combination 1 TSP raw organic honey 1 TBSP Organic Acai Powder 2 TBSP Organic Chia Seeds 1 TSP Lucuma Powder (Optional – adds a caramel-like sweetness) 1-2 TSP Maca Powder (Optional) 400-500ml Almond milk / Coconut milk or half milk half water BLEND! Pour in to your most favourite bowl and decorate with your own combination of toppings. Mine includes: A Handful of Organic Goji berries A Handful of Organic Mulberries A Handful of Organic Cacao Nibs A Handful of Organic homemade granola or my current favorite brand – The Paleo Co. Granola My measurements are rough – it totally depends on how big you want your smoothie to be, or how much of what you prefer.
